A Legacy of Leadership Since 1898

The Mena Polk County Chamber of Commerce, established in 1898, is the oldest and largest business organization in Polk County. Its inception coincided with the region's pivotal era of growth and transformation. Just two years prior, in 1896, the city of Mena was founded as a strategic stop along the Kansas City, Pittsburg & Gulf Railroad (later the Kansas City Southern Railway), developed by Arthur Stillwell. The town's name honors Mena Janssen, the wife of one of the railroad's Dutch financiers.​

In 1898, the same year the Chamber was founded, Mena became the county seat of Polk County, moving from the nearby town of Dallas. This transition marked Mena's emergence as a central hub for commerce and governance in the region.​

A Community Built on Resilience and Growth

Throughout its history, Mena has demonstrated resilience and adaptability. From its early days as a railroad town to its current status as a gateway to the Ouachita National Forest, the city has continually evolved to meet the needs of its residents and businesses. The Chamber has played a pivotal role in this evolution, fostering economic development, supporting local enterprises, and enhancing the quality of life in the region.
