The 2019 Community Awards have been opened. Below is a list of the Volunteer of the Year nominees. We have provided a brief bio and some of the nomination submissions that were sent in.

Linda Rowe

Linda Rowe is a Mena local who retired as a Marketing Executive from Union Bank. She is involved in several local organizations including Polk County Rotary. She participates in multiple local events and stays involved in helping improve Polk County.

Nomination: Linda has dedicated herself to our community for years. She’s a hard worker who goes out of her way to help those in need. She’s very active in Rotary and other local organizations. She has worked at Union Bank for years. Linda is smart, hard working, and community minded. She has a heart for others. I would love to see her recognized.

Shannon Clifford

Shannon Clifford is currently a manager at the Skyline Cafe and has been employed there since 2013. Shannon volunteers with BASE of the Ouachitas, Clarice's Room of Hope, and veterans organizations. Offers face painting for non-profit fundraising events and festivals such Lum-N-Abner, Special Olympics, etc and the proceeds go to the non-profit.

Nomination: Shannon is always concerned about and goes out of her way to help disabled and less fortunate people in the community. She donates and makes it possible for others to donate money and material items for children and families, especially during holidays when these families and individuals would not otherwise be able to celebrate holidays or special occasions. There are several disabled veterans who go to Shannon when they are in need, knowing that she has the resources and contacts to help them. I think Shannon is one of the biggest assets to our community. She is a great help to people in need and never expects nor accepts any kind of reimbursement or recognition for her efforts.

Sue Cavner

Sue Cavner is a local resident and is currently the Senior Behavioral Health/Cedar Haven Director at Mena Regional Health system. Sue has been involved in several local organizations and events throughout the years.

Nomination: For years, Sue has dedicated her life in various capacities to this community. These are just the volunteer activities that I am aware of and feel certain, it is not a complete list. I know that she was instrumental in revitalizing the MRHS Foundation and I believe continues to serve as the Chair. She has been a Rotary member locally since its inception. She is a board member of Arora. She and her husband had a boys ministry for many, many years. She has served on the Mena Water Commission and spent many years serving in the Lady Ouachitas organization. She is also a member of the Board of Visitors of UA Rich Mountain. I believe she is very deserving of this recognition. Sue Cavner is an amazing person and a tireless volunteer. She has been an active leader in the Rotary Club of Polk County/Mena since 2000. She has volunteered her time and skills to the Polk County Developmental Center, Mena Regional Health System Foundation and the Mena Water Commission., She currently serves as Chairman of each one of these Boards. She works more than full time and helps care for her grandchildren when needed. She is one of the most caring, giving individuals I have ever known. All of these organizations work for the benefit of others and in improving the quality of life of Polk County citizens. Sue Cavner She is on numerous local governing boards Chartered member of the Mena/Polk County Rotary Club She was the voice of the Miss Polk County Pageant for several years You can always spot Sue at local community events volunteering with a smile.

Pastor Victor Rowell

Mena local, Pastor Victor Rowell, is the Lead Pastor at the Crossing Church. He and Susan, his wife of more than 25 years, have three daughters and they love hanging out with them. They planted The Crossing in October 2005. Victor has been involved in ministry for about 25 years. He is passionate about seeing people come alive in Jesus. It is his desire that every person come to a personal relationship with Jesus, daily walking, talking, and hanging out with Him.

Nomination: Victor loves this community and loves helping people. He is always using his time to serve others and looking for ways to better our community. In fact, him and his church do some kind of big community event every year. This past year, they worked with the city during the spring clean-up event to help clean up people’s yards and homes that were not capable of doing it themselves. Victor is the type of person that does not have to be a member of service organizations or on community boards to volunteer and serve others. He is the kind of person that does it every single day where he’s at and has had a big, positive impact on our community because of it.
